Recall the debate regarding substitute materials in architecture. Define the practical problems posed in historical rehabilitation and the surrounding philosophical questions. Evaluate the process of connecting a new exterior addition while mitigating any material loss to an external wall of a historic building. List any National Park Service preservation standards regarding new additions especially in terms of size scale color material and character. Recognize how the overzealous use of substitute materials can greatly impair the historic character of a historic structure. Demonstrate the understanding of moisture penetration ultraviolet degradation and differing thermal expansion and contraction rates of dissimilar materials.
